Dien Bien Phu

French US - built M24 ChaffeeDien Bien Phu is a destination for history buffs and a close to the border with Laos. Dien Bien Phu is famous in the world over as the site of a battle that can truly be called decisive. The French colonial forces were roundly defeated at the hands of the Viet Minh on 7 May 1954 and the days of their Indochina empire were finally numberd.

The area around Dien Bien Phu is also home to many ethnic minorities. Especially the victorious battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954, almost all historical site of this battle lying to the east of the Muong Thanh Field have been preserved interact. It’s the Museum of Dien Bien Phu victorious battle, the cemeteries in Hill A1, Him Lam Hill, Doc Lap Hill, and Muong Thanh Airfield, etc. These are the historical sites of the 56 day fierce battle of Vietnamese troops and people, which results in our glorious victory of Dien Bien Phu.

The battle was significant beyond the valleys of Dien Bien Phu. Vo Nguyen Giap’s victory ended major French involvement in Indochina and led to the accords which partitioned Vietnam into North and South. Eventually, these conditions inspired American involvement in the Vietnam War. The battle of Dien Bien Phu is often described as a great victory for a Southeast Asian nation over a modern Western (i.e. colonial) power.
