Festivals in Hanoi (1)

An Hoa village Festival

Time: the 10th to the 12th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Yen Hoa Ward, Cau Giay District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Ly Nhan Tong, Lady Van Phuc, Lady Tu Nang (daughter of Ly Nam De), Bach Hac tam giang.
Characteristics: Worshiping ceremonies are carried out by men only or by women only, Chinese chess playing, cock fighting.

An Phu Communal House Festival

Time: The 13th day of the second lunar month.
Place:  Nghia Do Ward, Cau Giay District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Nguyen Bong God and Mr. Tran Toan.
Characteristics: Game of “di câu noi” (going on the noi bridge). A long, small, smooth and pliable bamboo is spanned from the lakeshore to the mid-lake, look like a bridge swaying lightly, and not fit a foot. The prize hang on the above able to hand.

Ba Chua Kho Temple (Giang Vo) Festival

Time: the 12th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Giang Vo Communal House, Giang Vo Street, Dong Da District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Ba Chua Kho (Queen of the Stock).
Characteristics: The worshiping ceremony of 13 villages. Games: human chess, duck catching, puppetry show, and water puppetry show.

Ba Gia Village Festival

Time: 9th to the 11th day of the first lunar month.
Place: Phu Gia Communal House, Tay Ho District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Royal Highest Trang Muc, a general of Saint Dong, Queen of silkworm Quynh Hoa.
Characteristics: Water procession, a dao singing.

Ba Tam Temple Festival

Time: The 19th to the 22nd day of the second lunar month and the 25th day of the seventh lunar month. The main festival day is on the 19th day of the second lunar month. The festival is held in large-scale every 5-year.
Place: Duong Da Hamlet, Duong Xa Commune, Gia Lam District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Imperial concubine Y Lan.
Characteristics: Custom of “Phat co tong” (raising the flag of the canton).

Ba Tia Communal House Festival

Time: the 8th to the 10th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Vinh Ninh Hamlet, Vinh Quynh Commune, Thanh Tri District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Truong Tu Nuong, General under Hai Ba Trung.
Characteristics: Contests of wrestling, chess, smash pots and pans while going on the bridge.

Bac Bien Village Festival

Time: 6th day of the third lunar month.
Place: Ngoc Thuy Commune, Gia Lam District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Ly Thuong Kiet, Hai Ba Trung, Dao Ky.
Characteristics: Palanquin procession of the relationship between neighbouring villages, carp releasing.

Bach Ma Temple Festival

Time: the 12th to the 13th day of the second lunar month.
Place: 76 Hang Buom Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Bach Ma God (the symbol of God of sun), Long Do God (the god defends the east), confer a title of “Thang Long Capital of Nation royal tutelary god”
Characteristics: Xuan Nguu presenting rite.

Bai An Communal House Festival

Time: the 10th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Bai An Village, Nghia Do Ward, Cau Giay District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Saint Chu and Mr. Dau, Mrs. Dau.
Characteristics: A palanquin procession by knees, ca trù singing, and human chess.
Bat Trang Village Festival

Time: From the 14th to the 16th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Bat Trang Communal House, Bat Trang Commune, Gia Lam District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Han Cao To and Lu Hau, Cai O Minh Chinh Tu Royal Highest, top-ranking general Phan, Ho Quoc Genie, Bach Ma Genie.
Characteristics: Water procession, ancestral tablet washing, contest of composing ca tru song to sing on the worshipping ceremony.

Bich Cau Dao Quan Festival

Time: 12th day of the eighth lunar month.
Place: 14 Cat Linh Street, Dong Da District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: The tien ong Tran Tu Uyen.
Characteristics: Ca tru singing.

Bo De Village Festival

Time: 6th day of the first lunar month.
Place: Phu Vien Village (Bo De is the official name of Phu Vien Village), Bo De Ward, Long Bien District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Cao Son, Ms. Can My Nuong, Dung Hoa.
Characteristics: Boat racing.

Boat racing Festival in Yen Duyen

Time: 15th day of the eighth lunar month.
Place: Yen Duyen Commune, Thanh Tri District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Tran Khat Chan (tutelary god), Ba Chua (the Queen).
Characteristics: Boat racing.

Bronze casting village of Ngu Xa

Location: In Ba Dinh District, Hanoi.
Characteristic: The village of Ngu Xa appears as a small peninsula near the Truc Bach Lake. It’s where many sophisticated bronze products were produced for the needs of the ancient capital of Thang Long.    (Detail)

Can Khe Village Festival

Time: the 16th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Nguyen Khe Commune, Dong Anh District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Phu Dong Thien Vuong.
Characteristics: A big procession of 16 groups with meticulous preparing. 60 young men and over 100 old people take part in the procession.

Chem Temple Festival

Time: 14th to the 16th day of the fourth lunar month.
Place: Thuy Phuong Commune, Tu Liem District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Ly Ong Trong and his wife – Princess Bach Tinh.
Characteristics: Water procession on river, releasing pigeons.

Chi Nam Festival (Phu Dong Festival)

Time: 8th day of the fourth lunar month.
Place: Le Chi Commune, Gia Lam District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Saint Dong, Mr. Hien Cong, who had merit of fighting Yin invaders.
Characteristics: Sacrifice-offering ceremony, battle performance, stick fighting, stick vieing, and coconut vieing.

Choosing Bridegroom Festival

Time: The 2nd day of the second lunar month.
Place: Duong Yen Village, Xuan Non Commune, Dong Anh District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Lady General Le Thi Hoa in Hai Ba Trung Time.
Characteristics: Unique festival, in order to choose a talented and righteous bridegroom for Lady General Le Hoa.

Co Loa Festival

Time: From the 6th to the 16th day of the first lunar month, the main festival day is on the 6th day of the first lunar month.
Place: Co Loa Commune, Dong Anh District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: King An Duong Vuong.
Characteristics: The procession of 12 hamlets and 7 villages, the procession of “alive” king in Nhoi Village.
Co Nhue Festival

Time: the 1st day of the eighth lunar month.
Place: Co Nhue Commune, Tu Liem District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Dong Chinh vuong (the 5th son of King Le Thai To) who had merit of fighting Ming aggressors, his wife and Princess Ta Minh Hien.
Characteristics: A palanquin procession, reporting ritual to god, boi chess playing, human chess, doi (repartee) singing, cock fighting.

Cong Yen Festival

Time: 13th day of the first lunar month.
Place: Cong Yen Temple, Cong Vi Ward, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Royal Highest Saint Quang Hong.
Characteristics: Worshipping ceremony is carried by men and worshipping ceremony is carried by women, ca tru singing, birds fighting, cocks fighting.

Cot Village Festival

Time: the 12th to the 15th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Cot Communal House, Yen Hoa Ward, Cau Giay District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Gods: Cao Son, Diem La, Moc Tinh, two gods of the soil (Royal Lady Trinh Thuc and top-ranking General Trang Han anh linh).
Characteristics: A procession of 7 palanquins (five for imperial votive tablets, one for royal honour-conferring diploma and incense serving, one for water jar).

Dai Lan Village Festival

Time: 6th to the 8th day of the first lunar month.
Place: Dai Lan Hamlet, Duyen Ha Commune, Thanh Tri District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Minh Ho, Linh Chieu, Cha Muc (Generals of Hung Vuong period and also three brothers).
Characteristics: A procession and making a feast of ca lang (hemibagrus), wrestling, sticks fighting, sticks dancing.

Dai Mo Festival

Time: 6th to the 8th day of the first lunar month.
Place: Dai Mo Commune, Tu Liem District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: A La Nang De (general lady of Hai Ba Trung), Thuy Hai Long vuong Nguyen Quy Duc, Nguyen Quy An, Nguyen Quy Kinh.
Characteristics: steamed – glutinous rice contest, human chess, a dào singing.

Dai Yen Village Festival

Time: 14th day of the third lunar month.
Place: Dai Yen Village, Ngoc Ha Ward, Ba Dình District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Princess Ngoc Hoa.
Characteristics: Human chess, cock fighting, nightingale fighting, dâng hoa (flower offering) dancing, old tuong performance.

Dam Village Festival

Time: From the 9th to the 13th day of the third lunar month. The main festival day is on the 10th day of the third lunar month.
Place: Dam Village, Tay Tuu Commune, Tu Liem District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Saint Bach Hac Tam Giang.
Characteristics: Boat racing in three festival days.

Dich Vong Trung Festival

Time: the 15th day of the first lunar month and the 12th day of the second lunar month. Held in the large-scale every 5-year on the 12th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Trung Hamlet, Dich Vong Ward, Cau Giay District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Chu Ly Royal Highest, Trieu Chí Thanh Royal Highest.
Characteristics: Wrestling, cock fighting, Chinese chess, pots and pans smashing, cheo singing, rope swinging.

Dinh Cong Jewelry Village

Location: Dinh Cong Jewelry Village is located on the To Lich river bank is Dinh Cong Thuong Village, also called Dinh Cong kim hoan (Jewelry). It belongs to the present Thanh Tri District, Hanoi.
Characteristic: The name of the village shows us it is already famous for jewelry handicraft.

Dong Co Temple Festival

Time: 4th day of the fourth lunar month.
Place: Tay Ho District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Bronze Drum Genie.
Characteristics: The festival is held in commemorating King Ly Thai Tong when he made the procession of Bronze Drum Genie in Dan Ne (Thanh Hoa) to Thang Long (Hà Noi now), set up a temple to worship the genie.

Dong Da Festival (Hanoi)

Time: The 5th day of the first lunar month.
Place: Dong Da Mound, Dong Da District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: King Quang Trung (Nguyen Hue).
Characteristics: “Thang Long Fire Dragon” dancing.

Dong Du Village Festival

Time: the 7th day to the 13th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Dong Du Commune, Gia Lam District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Cao Son, Bach Da, and Linh Lang Royal Highest.
Characteristics: Water procession, chess playing.

Dong Festival

Time: From the 6th to the 12th day of the fourth lunar month. Main festival day is on the 9th day of the fourth lunar month.
Place: Phu Dong Commune, Gia Lam District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Saint Dong (Phu Dong Thien Vuong).
Characteristics: Theatrical team Ai Lao sings and dances for god worshipping; ba van thuan, ba van nghich dance imitating old battle of Saint Dong.

Dong Nhan Temple Festival

Time: The 6th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Dong Nhan Temple, Dong Nhan Ward, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Hai Ba Trung.
Characteristics: Sacrifices-offering ceremony of the court, dancing of worshipping lamp.

Dong Phu Communal House Festival

Time: From the 6th to the 7th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Dong My Commune, Thanh Tri District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: The village’ s tutelary god: Su quan Nguyen Sieu.
Characteristics: Thuong Do and Ha Do ceremonies.

Dong Soc Son Festival (Soc Son Temple Festival)

Time: From the 6th to the 8th day of the first lunar month. The main festive day is on the  7th day.
Place: Phu Linh Commune, Soc Son District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Saint Dong.
Characteristics: Fighting for bamboo flowers and cut the General of Yin invaders.

Due Tu Pagoda Festival

Time: 7th day of the third lunar month.
Place: Dich Vong Ward, Cau Giay District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Shaman Dai Dien.
Characteristics: Row song singing (imitating rowing rhythm) and the song telling story of Madam Thanh De.

Festival of Five Moc Villages

Time: The 9th to the 11th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Moc Quan Nhan, Moc Chinh Kinh, Moc Cu Loc, Moc Giap Nhat, Moc Phung Khoang, in Trung Hoa Ward, Cau Giay District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Doan Thuong, La Lieu, Hung Lang Cong, and Phung Luong.
Characteristics: A procession of palanquin pass 5 villages, dragon dancing, and lion dancing.    (Detail)

Flower villages around Hanoi

Characteristic: The area of Tay Ho, Quang Ba, Ngoc Ha, Huu Tiep, Dai Yen were the flower-growing land. Overtime, Hanoi has come into its times of modernization and industrialization. The traditional surrounding flower villages have been turning into “villages within the city”.

Ghenh Temple Festival

Time: The 20th day of the eighth lunar month.
Place: Ai Mo Hamlet, Bo De Ward, Long Bien District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Three goddesses: Lieu Hanh (the daughter of Ngoc Hoang), La Binh (the daughter of Tan Vien – God of Mountain), Le Ngoc Han (King Quang Trung’s wife).
Characteristics: Van singing the praise of the Holy Mother’s merit.

Gia Thuy Communal House Festival

Time: The 10th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Gia Thuy Communal House, Gia Thuy Ward and Yen Tan Temple, Ngoc Thuy Ward, Long Bien District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Trung Thanh, Dong Luong, Thung Vinh, Quy Nuong.
Characteristics: Ca tru singing, swinging, human chess.

Gian Communal House Festival

Time: the 9th to the 11th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Cao Dinh Hamlet, Xuan Dinh Commune, Tu Liem District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Ly Phuc Man, General of Ly Dynasty (defeated Luong and Lam Ap aggressors, defending the Van Xuan Country).
Characteristics: A palanquin procession, human chess playing, martial art performance, cock fighting, wrestling.

Giap Luc Village Festival

Time: 14th day of the eighth lunar month.
Place: Giap Luc Hamlet, Thinh Liet Ward, Hoang Mai District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Nguyen Chinh (tutelary god).
Characteristics: Children from 4 to 5 years old take part in ritual of presenting Saint to the village at communal house with 100 khau trau and a bottle of wine.

Gung Communal House Festival

Time: the 12th day of the second lunar month.
Place: Khuong Dinh Ward,Thanh Xuan District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: To Lich God and Le Duong Ve.
Characteristics: Chay ma ceremony, dragon dancing, lion dancing, human chess, wrestling, chèo singing.

Ha Huong Village Festival

Time: 12th to the 15th day of the first lunar month.
Place: Lien Ha Commune, Dong Anh District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Vu Duc Cong, Vu Minh Cong – famous physicians during Hung Vuong period.
Characteristics: sacrifices- offering ceremony, procession, wrestle.

Hai Boi Village Festival

Time: 4th to the 6th day of the first lunar month.
Place: Hai Boi Commune, Dong Anh District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Trieu Nguyen, Trieu Chính, Trieu Lenh.
Characteristics: Human chess, climbing up to the oil pillar, classical drama, hat trong quan, hat giao duyen or hat ong (boys and girls sing traditional love songs to express their love for each other): Two sides sing through a long thread that tie with a frogskin-covered pipe.

Ham Long Pagoda Festival

Time: The 15th day of the fifth lunar month.
Place: Thuy Phuong Commune, Tu Liem District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: The Buddha and Ly Ong Trong, who had merit of controlling floods on the Red River, was sent to go abroad as King’s envoy to help Tan King to fight against Hung No aggressors (221 BC).
Characteristics: Royal order procession, giving out report ceremony to worship Buddha and pray for the peace of Saint Chem and his wife’s souls.

Ho Khau Village Festival

Time: the 13th day of the second lunar month, the birthdays of two saints.
Place: Buoi Ward, Tay Ho District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Duc Thanh Royal Highest (Cong Le), Ve quoc Royal Highest (Ca Le).
Characteristics: Dance of skiff rowing(dance on shore) with the participation of 36 young men, called giai boi.

Hoa Lang Pagoda Festival

Time: 7th day of the third lunar month.
Place: Cau Giay District, Hanoi.
Objects of worship: Tu Vinh and Tang Thi Loan (Parents of Tu Dao Hanh).
Characteristics: Deities fighting ceremony
