The government of India is never going to go out of business! Employees will never get downsized en masse or be fired because of lack of performance, age, or gender. Government employee unions are powerful bodies that constantly fight for the betterment of working conditions as well as monetary and other compensation for workers. Therefore, regular increments, bonuses, H.R.A (housing rent allowance), T.A (travelling allowance), sanitary working conditions, medical benefits and insurance, holiday packages, reasonable work hours, provident funds and gratuity, dearness allowance, scholarships for children of employees, retirement packages, pension and many other benefits are provided that may be unavailable for the private workforce.

Benefits available to Government Employees

The work hours are set beforehand and standardized so that nobody needs to work extra hours, and even if they do, they will be well compensated in terms of over-time payments. When employees work on holidays or weekends they are provided with ‘compensatory relief’ and can avail of it when required. However, for those who are employed in the ‘essential categories’ shift systems are often employed and must be performed with utmost responsibility and commitment.

When the government is your employer that is never any worry of getting cheated; there is a complete guarantee of payment for the service performed. It is also possible to avail of special discounts from other governmental agencies — for example, a railway employee gets discounts from BSNL or Maruti — that are not given to the rest of the population. Also, public sector banks are much more willing to provide loans such as housing loans, vehicle loans, educational loans etc. to government employees rather than businesspeople or even those employed by private companies.

In the case of the death of an employee pension is paid to a spouse as well. Also, the spouse or any immediate family member is given a job according to their qualifications and skill level. If a death happens ‘on the job’ compensation is made and the employee’s family’s welfare is taken care of by the government especially in terms of children’s education etc.

Government employment in independent India has always stood for stability and security. There was a time when fathers of prospective brides wanted only government employees as bridegrooms because it was a risk-free job that would provide financial security. Government employees have always been given very high status in Indian society; even today a government job is regarded as a great honor and privilege and is taken up with great pride and respect.
